With his battered suitcase and iconic red hat in tow, Paddington bear is back in action, as the new trailer for Paul King’s big-screen adaptation attests.
The footage offers us our first taste of Ben Whishaw in the title role, after the Skyfall actor replaced Colin Firth — who “consciously uncoupled” from the part and subsequently left the role — back in June. Charting the bear’s globetrotting trip from the jungles of Peru to the congested streets of London, Paddington will follow the adventures of Michael Bond’s creation as he adjusts to life in the England capital — or, at the very least, tries to.
Soon, though, the whimsical character attracts the attention of Nicole Kidman’s museum taxidermist, who has her eyes set on Paddington from the get-go.
Joining Whishaw and Kidman for the film are Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, Michael Gambon and Imelda Staunton.
Paddington will release in UK cinemas first on November 28 before arriving in the States on January 16, 2015. Until then, you can have a gander at the film’s official synopsis and maybe enjoy a smidgen of marmalade in the process.
From the beloved novels by Michael Bond and producer David Heyman (HARRY POTTER), PADDINGTON tells the story of the comic misadventures of a young Peruvian bear (voiced by Ben Whishaw) who travels to the city in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone, he begins to realize that city life is not all he had imagined – until he meets the kindly Brown family who read the label around his neck that says “Please look after this bear. Thank you,” and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist.
