The Walking Dead and Fury star Jon Bernthal has signed on for drug drama The Godmother along with Catalina Sandino Moreno, Oscar Jaenada and Mehdi Dehbi.
Due to be presented to international buyers at next month’s America Film Market, The Godmother will orbit around the true story of Colombian drug kingpin, Griselda Blanco (played here by Catherine Zeta-Jones).
In a press release, Nick Meyer — CEO of Sierra/Affinity — spoke highly about the premise of the film and the infamous character of Blanco herself.
“Griselda Blanco was a powerful woman with an incredible story and we cannot wait to see Catherine portray her in ‘The Godmother’ along with this talented supporting cast. We look forward to sharing more details about the films with buyers at this year’s AFM where we will make the film available to international distributors for the first time.”
Bearing no relation to Francis Ford Coppola’s seminal classic other than the subject matter, The Godmother will chart the meteoric rise of the Colombian drug lord and her role in the Miami drug wars throughout the 70s and 80s. Later in life, Blanco spent eighteen years before being released in 2004, before being assassinated by a drive-by killer two years ago.
So yeah, to say Zeta-Jones character has a chequered past is a bit of an understatement. Nevertheless, we’re intrigued to learn more about The Godmother. The film is being helmed by Norwegian director Eva Sørhaug, and production is set to get underway at some point in the spring.
We’ll keep you posted on more information from The Godmother as it appears. For now, you can let us know what you make of Bernthal’s addition to the film in the comments section below.
