What began life as a humble Kickstarter passion project has now turned into a bona fide hit, after developer Yacht Club Games announced that its crowdfunded platformer Shovel Knight has surpassed 300k sales to date.

The studio made the announcement via Twitter, and thanked the players who had taken up arms as the titular adventurer.

Shovel Knight initially arrived on Kickstarter tethered with a $75k goal, but soon, the project began to gain momentum and managed to accumulate over four times its original threshold, drawing in a total of $311,000k.

In our glowing review, we praised the platformer for its retro aesthetic and deep, rewarding gameplay.

Shovel Knight combines everything that was great about some of the best games from the NES era, and turns those beloved mechanics into something fresh. It’s a brilliant 2D action-platformer, which simply demands your attention.

Shovel Knight is currently available for Wii U, 3DS and PC. Whether this recent milestone will encourage the studio to bring the acclaimed platformer on to other systems remains to be seen, but for now, it’s worth taking a moment to bask in the success of a passion project that delivered in spades — no pun intended.
