Now that the core show has entered its seasonal hiatus, AMC has provided an update on the status of The Walking Dead spinoff series, which has been confirmed to take place in Los Angeles.
News comes by way of TV Line, who revealed that the upcoming companion project — known as Cobalt — will expand the action to a national scale, given that the headlining show primarily takes place in the decimated region of Atlanta. Back in September, AMC President Charlie Collier said the following:
“Almost from the beginning of The Walking Dead (which is set in Atlanta), fans have been curious about what is going on in the zombie apocalypse in other parts of the world.”
Shifting the flesh-munching action to the West Coast doesn’t exactly live up to the global expansion that Collier hinted at first, but it’s still refreshing to note that the spinoff will establish a whole new dynamic and set of characters considering that fans have been tethered to one group of survivors for the last five seasons.
And that new-fangled ragtag crew will be headed up by Cliff Curtis, who joined the casting line-up shortly after Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam signed on to Cobalt. From the information released thus far, it’s understood that Curtis will play a divorced male teacher during the first days of the zombie apocalypse, proving that The Walking Dead spinoff series is very much a prequel.
