The forces behind the biggest cinematic universe of all time – Marvel – often have many factors to contend with. One of their chief issues when adapting their own comic book storylines for the big screen is factoring in surprises for diehard fans of the printed panel. In layman’s terms, it’s nice for everybody to have a few twists on screen, and it’s a trend that appears to be continuing. With their next major release – Avengers: Age Of Ultron – set to hit cinemas in a mere four months, the background of a couple of that movie’s pivotal players may differ from their comic book counterparts.
One keen Reddit user has sourced screenshots of two key characters from the movie, either from a new toy line or a mock-up of a press release. Regardless of where they’re from, the pictures are captioned by rather detailed descriptions. Originally in the comics, Ultron (James Spader) was crafted by Ant-Man and Vision (Paul Bettany) was subsequently created by Ultron. According to these two descriptions, for the movie their backstories will differ significantly from the comics. You can see both snaps above, and a closer look at the text below.
First up, it’s Ultron:
First discovered as a simple computer program hidden among the ruins of the Chitauri invasion of New York, the being known as Ultron soon completed its development into a sophisticated artificial intelligence after some experimentation by Tony Stark. Ultron’s first shocking ultimatum upon gaining consciousness was to declare the human race its enemy. Setting out to exterminate all life on the planet, the unstable and emotional Ultron seeks to upgrade its mechanical body to an ultimate, unstoppable form. With an army of robotic drones and the ability to enter and corrupt any computer network, Ultron will stop at nothing to see humanity wiped out.
We already knew Stark was arrogant, but his decision to utilize Chitauri tech could be a trifle dangerous. After all, anyone who’s seen Terminator know it’s got the potential to end badly when you dabble with alien tech. Still, a nice shake-up from Ultron’s initial background.
Next up, here’s Vision’s biography:
Programmed by the combined geniuses of Tony Stark & Bruce Banner and imparted with the ability to fly, project intense energy beams and change the density of his form, the Vision has proved himself a worthy hero, aiding the Avengers in their struggle against the evil A.I. Ultron.
There’s not as much unveiled here, but it bolsters what we already knew about Vision. With Avengers: Age Of Ultron zooming into theaters on May 1st, 2015, we can expect plenty more character details in the coming months. Until then, be sure to let us know what you make of the changes to Ultron and Vision.
