Despite the fact that Chloƫ Grace Moretz has admitted that she is unlikely to return as the foul-mouthed heroine, Mark Millar has revealed that he still harbours plans for a potential Hit-Girl spinoff film before moving on to the as-yet-unconfirmed Kick-Ass 3.

It’s all a little pie in the sky right now, considering that excitement for a purported threequel has cooled dramatically following the middling reception surrounding Kick-Ass 2. Still, director Matthew Vaughn remains as passionate as ever about the comic book title, revealing that he is “pretty sure” he can twist both Moretz and Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s arms into returning to conclude the story.

“Do you know what’s going to be next if I do it… we’ve finished plotting it. What we have to do is, we’ve got to do the FIRST CLASS to the KICK-ASS world. We lost a few fans on Kick-Ass 2. It wasn’t as loved as one would’ve hoped. So we have this idea for a Hit Girl prequel. It’s a really strong, really simple prequel where I think we can regain the love and the passion. If that happens, I’m pretty sure I can persuade Aaron and Chloe to come back and finish the story of Kick-Ass with Kick-Ass 3”

If development was to push ahead on the nebulous prequel, then it wouldn’t see Vaughn return at the helm; rather, the Kingsman: The Secret Service director has his eyes set on another filmmaker to fill the void. Specifically, this volatile, ass-kicking torch could be passed to someone akin to Gareth Evans — of The Raid fame — who exudes the intelligence and eye for action required to give Hit-Girl the appropriate direction on the big screen.

Whether this comes to pass, however, is another question entirely. With both actors growing in prominence by the minute, Vaughn and Millar may find it difficult to secure Moretz for the proposed spinoff, let alone both her and Taylor-Johnson for Kick-Ass 3.
