Hot on the heels of the brawler’s appropriately action-packed story trailer is the announcement that NetherRealm Studios is preparing to release Mortal Kombat X: Mobile for iOS and Android devices in April alongside the full game’s much-anticipated launch.
Coming by way of publisher Warner Bros. Interactive, the free-to-play handheld version has been described as a “fighter/card battler hybrid” that retains all of the gory and brutal action you’d expect from a Mortal Kombat installment. And while the reveal trailer above doesn’t necessarily give us much information about this mobile version, it’s clear the port will boast some multiplayer features.
In a statement, Ed Boon, creative director of the legendary series, touched upon how Mortal Kombat X: Mobile will strive to reach a market that the core game wasn’t able to appeal to not so long ago, while still offering all of the over-the-top action the franchise is renown for.
“NetherRealm Studios has created a Mortal Kombat X mobile experience that allows more players than ever before to play this over-the-top fighting game through their ever-present smartphones, tablets or other devices. What’s more, we’ve expanded the unique cross-connectivity feature that links the mobile and console versions of Mortal Kombat X, delivering unique rewards to all players for simply playing the mobile game.”
There will be some crossover with Mortal Kombat X, too, as those who pick up the mainline entry into the series when it launches on April 14 will be able to unlock various buffs and content in the mobile version of the game and vice versa.
