The BBC says that the last season would continue in Belfast, charting the complex relationship between Gibson and Spector which “intensifies” as the story of the investigation into the murders becomes more “complex and intricate.” Season two ended on a stunning cliffhanger that brought the duo together during a fatal shoot-out; so there’s no doubt that their relationship will intensify.

Creator, writer and director of the show Alan Cubbitt returns to write and direct, bringing to a close the compelling serial drama, which aligns nicely with his plans for the story as he revealed in a statement:

“The cliff-hanger ending of season two was conceived in the hope of further exploring the characters and the themes that are at the heart of The Fall. We’re grateful to be given this opportunity by the BBC.”

Similarly, the BBC controller of drama commissioning, Ben Stephenson, said:

“The story is far from over. Allan has known the end game from the beginning – the cat and mouse game between Gillian and Jamie has one last act to play out. Who will win?”

On the heels of the announcement, the BBC also opted to drop a sneaky teaser for The Fall‘s last season which you can check out above. There’s no new footage contained within its brief runtime – as that isn’t really the point – it’s just the knowledge that this addictive crime drama will be granted a proper ending that has us excited.
