The latest post-apocalyptic outing into the Wasteland – first sighted in George Miller’s 1979 arid epic Mad Max – is creeping closer to its May release date. Mad Max: Fury Road may have lost its former leading man Mel Gibson, but it’s acquired a steely replacement in the shape of Tom Hardy.
Clutching steadfast to his belief that the best way to endure the harshness of an unforgiving dystopia is to remain alone, the titular character is shaken free when he meets Furiosa. It wouldn’t be a Mad Max movie without a gutsy female thrown into the mix, and now, courtesy of Total Film, we’ve a new glimpse at her full getup.
Charlize Theron, who has immersed herself into the role, plays Furiosa with a vigour that the actress herself recounted to the magazine:
“George [Miller, director] really wanted a woman to stand alongside Max, and that was all I knew, and I just thought, ‘Whoa, for a woman to stand next to him in that world, that would be pretty fucking cool.’ He was really kind of exploring women in this world at every age and there was something, selfishly, that I thought was almost better than Max. It’s very hard for a woman to feel that way when she steps into a world like that.”
In addition, the remainder of the new images highlight the Five Wives and Hardy’s titular hero getting into a bit of a tussle. Together, the trio indicate that we are most definitely in for a wild ride this year. While the prospect of invigorating such a well-known franchise has left us understandably cautious, by the looks of the stunning visuals witnessed today, there’s no reason for that caution whatsoever.
Co-starring Nicholas Hoult, Zoë Kravitz, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Riley Keough, and Hugh Keays-Byrne, Mad Max: Fury Road arrives on May 15.
Haunted by his turbulent past, Mad Max believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.
