Foregoing the story established in the first two movies, Insidious: Chapter 3 takes a backwards leap and introduces us to psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye) earlier in the timeline. With Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne’s family yet to appear on her radar, Elise becomes embroiled in the case of a young girl (Stephanie Scott) under attack from demonic forces keen to take possession of her mortal soul. Evidently, those malevolent spirits succeed in their quest.

Director James Wan, who co-wrote and directed the first two flicks, opted out of marshalling the prequel to the big screen in favor of Furious 7. Nevertheless, his absence doesn’t necessarily hint at a flubbed follow-up. Stepping into the shoes of his cohort, writer Leigh Whannell – the man behind the Saw franchise – hopped in to the director’s chair for his first time on the franchise. His familiarity with the material and keen knowledge of scares definitely point toward another bone-chilling flick.

Starring Dermot Mulroney, Stefanie Scott, Lin Shaye, Angus Sampson, and writer/director Leigh Whannell Insidious: Chapter 3 arrives in theaters on June 5, 2015.
