Following the panel for Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the Star Wars Celebration today, the second official trailer for the highly-anticipated return to the galaxy far, far away has been released, and it’s jam packed with glorious new footage.
From the deserts of the newly-unveiled planet Jakku to the reaches of deep space, the trailer delivers on all fronts, though it still hides (most) of its original cast in favor of showing off franchise newcomers John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac and, of course, the ball droid BB8.
As far as old faces go, Han Solo and Chewbacca make their triumphant return to the screen in the trailer’s ending moments, while R2-D2 gets a shot with a cloaked Luke Skywalker. Though it’s still light on plot details, the trailer leans heavily on imagery of the aftermath of the original trilogy, including a beautiful shot of a downed Star Destroyer and the deformed mask of Darth Vader. It also teases some new (and dangerous) things to come, with a few shots of new Sith Lord Kylo Ren and a shiny new badass and caped Stormtrooper (who guns after the Millenium Falcon in the bowels of an ancient Imperical ship).
Clocking in at a healthy 1:59, the trailer is more of a tease than anything, but it certainly succeeds in exceeding our high expectations for J.J. Abrams’ new chapter in this beloved saga.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters in a galaxy near you on December 18th, 2015. Until then, take a peak at the trailer above and some screenshots from it below and let us know what you think in the comments section.
