Long before it pummelled its way onto the silver screen, Sony Pictures ensured its ducks were in a row for The Equalizer. With genre stalwart Denzel Washington on board as the titular vigilante (real name Robert McCall) not to mention Training Day‘s Antoine Fuqua behind the lens, the studio served up a thriller that was as entertaining as it was efficient, checking all the right boxes for an action flick and bringing in an impressive box office haul to the tune of $192 million.
Generic though it may have been, Sony’s adaptation proved to be relatively successful, and now the company is pushing ahead with The Equalizer 2, a direct follow-up to last year’s actioner. That’s according to Collider, who report that the studio has every intention of massaging the property into a franchise with Washington at the helm.
Currently, both Washington and Fuqua have their hands full with The Magnificent Seven remake – reuniting the illustrious pair with Ethan Hawke – which is slated to arrive at some point in 2017. As such, production schedules will likely constrict The Equalizer 2 to the proverbial shelf for some time yet, and it’s unlikely that Sony will want to push ahead with this budding franchise without Washington and Fuqua doing what they do so well.
Not much is known about the sequel at this early stage, with Sony keeping the majority of details under wraps. Will any of the cast members from the original — namely Martin Csokas, Chloe Moretz and Haley Bennett – reprise their roles in the sequel? Time will tell.
