The CW has already found success with two DC Comics television adaptations in Arrow and The Flash, and will soon take an even more ambitious leap with a third: Legends of TomorrowNow, thanks to the network’s upfronts presentation, we have a few more details about the series as well as the first official promo image.

As previously reported, the show will feature established Arrow/Flash heroes and villains like Ray Palmer/The Atom (Brandon Routh), Captain Cold (Wentworth Miller), Heatwave (Dominic Purcell) and one half of Firestorm, Professor Martin Stein (Victor Garber). It will also introduce new characters like Hawkgirl (Ciara Renee), time-travelling rogue Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) and Franz Drameh in a mystery role that we suspect is either Cyborg or Wally West/Kid Flash.

Arrow‘s Caity Lotz is a main player as well, though until now we weren’t sure if she’d still play Sara Lance and take on the Canary moniker, or simply get recast into another role. Now, we’ve learned that it’s kind of both. Lotz, whose character bit the dust in Arrow‘s season three premiere, will star as White Canary, a minor villain who appeared in the 2010 DC Comics crossover event Brightest Day. Seeing as the Chinese martial artist isn’t a major character in DC lore, it would be quite easy for the Legends of Tomorrow writers to tweak her story a bit and put Sara Lance in the costume instead.

The details about Sara’s resurrection are still a mystery, though one only has to look at Arrow‘s third season for clues. The existence of the Lazarus Pit (which can heal wounds and bring people back from the dead) and the events of the season finale leave the door wide open for Sara’s return. Of course, with time travel in play, anything could happen, like the existence of different timelines and the introduction of one in which Sara didn’t actually die.

The other major reveal during the upfronts presentation was that Vandal Savage will be the immortal villain teased in the show’s synopsis, as we predicted. Savage is a strong antagonist in the DC Comics universe who has shaped (and often plagued) human history, taking on such aliases as Genghis Khan, Julius Caesar, Jack the Ripper and even Blackbeard. He’s often gone up against the Justice League as well and is definitely the kind of threat that requires a big team to take down.

Legends of Tomorrow will premiere in early 2016 as a midseason replacement (similar to how Marvel handled Agent Carter). The first trailer will arrive on Tuesday after The Flash season finale. Until then, let us know your thoughts about these new reveals in the comments below.
