The all-star cast for MGM’s upcoming remake of The Magnificent Seven just got a little bigger today with word that Magic Mike XXL actor Matt Bomer, best known for his starring role on USA’s White Collar, has signed on for a supporting role.
Bomer, who won a Golden Globe for his performance in HBO’s The Normal Heart, will play the husband of a woman (Haley Bennett) who attempts to stand up to a villainous robber baron (believed to be played by Daredevil‘s Vincent D’Onofrio). Unfortunately, it doesn’t go so well for him, leading the woman to hire a motley crew of gunslingers to protect her town from the baron’s rampaging gang of bandits.
Saddling up for the action-packed Western are Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Wagner Moura, Jason Momoa, Byung-hun Lee and Luke Grimes, making this one of the more star-studded action pics currently in development. It’s an update of the 1960 flick that starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson and Robert Vaughn.
[zerg]Nic Pizzolatto, the mastermind behind HBO’s True Detective, wrote a first draft for the remake that was then punched up by The Blind Side‘s John Lee Hancock. Antoine Fuqua (The Equalizer, upcoming boxing drama Southpaw) is sitting in the director’s chair.
Bomer’s casting comes as the actor is on the rise in Hollywood, with the lead role of Montgomery Clift in HBO’s 2016 biopic Monty, the main male role in American Horror Story: Hotel opposite Lady Gaga, and a significant part in Shane Black’s action noir The Nice Guys. Perhaps, with those kinds of roles, Bomer will soon be commanding the same attention that Pratt, another TV star turned blockbuster linchpin, did when he toplined Guardians of the Galaxy last summer.
Shooting on The Magnificent Seven is due to kick off later this month, with plans to release the pic sometime in 2016
