Though it was all-but-confirmed until now, Sony and Bungie have officially unveiled that Destiny‘s September expansion will indeed be called The Taken King, and will chart Guardians’ battle with the titular big bad, Oryx.
Considering that Oryx – who will no doubt act as the next Raid boss – is the father of Crota, the lunar-based monster that meet his match during December’s The Dark Below expansion, Oryx certainly has a bone to pick with you, and it’s understood that he will unleash a whole new wave of enemies known as the Taken. Hence the name.
Per Bungie:
Oryx, The Taken King has arrived in our solar system, bringing with him a corrupted army to exact revenge on the Guardians who destroyed his son, Crota, and to consume our worlds. Arm yourself with newfound abilities, weapons, and gear. Defeat the Taken hordes. Make your way aboard the Dreadnaught, and face Oryx himself within his inner sanctum.
Much like Destiny expansions before it, The Taken King will herald a slew of PlayStation-exclusive content in the form of Strike missions and a handful of multiplayer maps for the in-game Crucible segment. Sony didn’t specify whether these in-game bonuses will be timed-exclusive, though it seems likely that the content will make its way onto Xbox platforms soon after launch.
Destiny‘s The Taken King drops on September 15.
