The Legend Of Zelda Still Set For Wii U Despite Looming Arrival Of Nintendo NX

Despite the fact that The Big N ruled out the possibility of discussing its nebulous Nintendo NX hardware, the arrival of the console - whenever that may be - has still piqued the interest of the gaming community. But what does that mean for the Wii U and its slate of upcoming titles? While we can't conclusively comment on the status of the system itself, Game Designer Shigeru Miyamoto assured fans that one of its most anticipated games, The Legend of Zelda, is still on course for a Wii U release.

Despite the fact that The Big N ruled out the possibility of discussing its nebulous Nintendo NX hardware, the arrival of the console – whenever that may be – has still piqued the interest of the gaming community. But what does that mean for the Wii U and its slate of upcoming titles?

While we can’t conclusively comment on the status of the system itself, Game Designer Shigeru Miyamoto assured fans that one of its most anticipated games, The Legend of Zelda, is still on course for a Wii U release.

Speaking with IGN, the reputable game designer spoke briefly about Zelda‘s Wii debut, though admitted that there is no new information to report at this time.

“We’re here to talk about Star Fox but Zelda is still coming to Wii U,” Miyamoto said through an interpreter, “so don’t worry about that.”

Miyamoto continued, “My thing with E3 is that we always focus on what’s coming out in the immediate future. We have some really great Zelda footage and, at some point we will be showing that off, but not today.”

It’s hardly surprising that Nintendo has no plans to unveil further details about The Legend of Zelda Wii U – be it gameplay or an official release date – at the time of writing. As yesterday’s somewhat lacklustre Direct Presentation proved, Star Fox is very much the mascot hoping to inject some life into the publisher’s ailing hardware later this year, though considering that both Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart failed to reverse the Wii U’s fortunes this time last year, we’re tapering our expectations.

As for the Nintendo NX, the company’s next project is nothing more than a codename right now, though it’ll be interesting to see how The Big N treats some of its IP – Metroid, for instance – ahead of this imminent transition to new hardware. The Legend of Zelda, on the other hand, is remaining on Wii U and will likely be one of the final first-party games for the platform.
