Next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse is going to be absolutely massive, even by X-Men standards, and the latest issue of EW is shedding a little light on the anticipated superhero sequel. Above, check out some concept art of the tomb said to house ancient mutant Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), a being of staggering power whose re-emergence threatens the entire world.
Suiting up to battle the mutant, whose abilities afford him godlike might, are X-Men members Charles Xavier (James McAvoy), Magneto (Michael Fassbender) and Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). Joining them for the pic, which is set in 1983, are teen incarnations of familiar mutants including Storm (Alexandra Shipp), Cyclops (Tye Sheridan), Jean Grey (Sophie Turner) and Nightcrawler (Kodi Smit-McPhee).
As Apocalypse threatens the entire world, other mutants also come out of the woodwork, including powerful psychic Psylocke (Olivia Munn), Quicksilver (Evan Peters), Angel (Ben Hardy), Jubilee (Lana Condor), Havok (Lucas Till) and Beast (Nicholas Hoult).
[zerg]“This is kind of a conclusion of six X-Men films, yet a potential rebirth of younger, newer characters,” director Bryan Singer told EW. Apocalypse will be his fourth outing with the franchise – Matthew Vaughn took the reins on prequel First Class, while the Wolverine spinoffs were directed by Gavin Hood and James Mangold.
Singer says that the events of Apocalypse result in the true creation of the X-Men, which has been slowly drawing closer in First Class and Days of Future Past. “This is the true birth of the X-Men,” Singer said. “This is how it happens.”
X-Men: Apocalypse opens May 26 next year.
