Opening in theaters tomorrow is the latest Gillian Flynn adaptation, Dark Places, which was directed by Gilles Paquet-Brenner. The film stars Oscar-winner Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Christina Hendricks and Corey Stoll, and is already being praised for a strong leading performance from Theron and a tense, thrilling plot that will keep you pinned to your seat.
For those unfamiliar with Flynn’s novel, it follows Libby Day (Theron), who was only a child when her family was brutally murdered in their Kansas farmhouse, and her brother, Ben (Stoll), was convicted of the crime. Now an adult, Libby meets Lyle Wirth (Hoult), leader of “The Kill Club,” a group of wannabe detective that study famous murders who convince her to help them prove Ben’s innocence.
Recently, at the LA press day for Dark Places, we sat down with Theron, Hendricks, Flynn and Paquet-Brenner for an exclusive interview about their new film. They discussed Theron’s ability to choose strong female roles, reuniting with Nicolas Hoult after Fury Road, Cosplaying as Furiosa, “The Kill Club,” Paquet-Brenner’s screen adaptation of Flynn’s book, and how Hendricks was originally cast in a much smaller role.
