Ridley Scott Says Questions Will Be Answered In Prometheus 2

Of all the well-held criticisms levelled at Ridley Scott's Prometheus a few years back, arguably the most vocal of the bunch was the way in which the ambitious sci-fi flick raised fascinating questions of human existence and our own creation. But such mesmerizing theories were soon bogged down by clumsy characters and blockbuster action set-pieces, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the lore of the Engineers and their connection to mankind have been lost in the ether.

Of all the well-held criticisms levelled at Ridley Scott’s Prometheus a few years back, arguably the most vocal of the bunch was the way in which the ambitious sci-fi flick raised fascinating questions of human existence and our own creation. But such mesmerizing theories were soon bogged down by clumsy characters and blockbuster action set-pieces, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the lore of the Engineers and their connection to mankind have been lost in the ether.

Upon promoting The Martian at Toronto International Film Festival, Scott touched upon the overarching story of Prometheus 2, and how he plans to tackle at least some of those lingering questions with the anticipated sequel.

For the uninitiated, the towering Engineers – or Space Jockey, for OG fans of Scott’s sci-fi universe – were the ancient deities responsible for the creation of a deadly alien pathogen that would go on to seed the Xenomorphs we know and fear. During the course of Prometheus, Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender et al. make tracks for LV-223 in search of alien life, only to discover that the Engineers now seek the ruination of humanity for reasons unknown.

Could this form the spine of Prometheus 2? With Rapace and Fassbender’s character headed to Paradise to locate the origin of the Engineers, Scott may be cooking up a chance for our humble species to make their makers. Here, in an interview with Collider, the director teased what’s to come from the sci-fi sequel.

It starts off with a very grand idea—or a grand question, really. Who are they and why did they create such evil biology and bacteriology? And [in creating], to protect themselves from what? So the questions are answered there, or rather, beginning to be answered in Prometheus 2.

Ridley Scott, Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender are all primed to return for Prometheus 2 when filming begins on Fox’s grand sci-fi sequel in February of next year.
