Hot off his stunning performance for Richard Linklater in Boyhood, Ellar Coltrane forwent further acting work and hit the catwalk for some serious modelling gigs. Now, the call of a different camera has lured him back to the motion picture world, as he’s today signed on to join The Circle‘s star-studded ensemble.

Production on the Dave Eggers adaptation kicked into gear earlier this year with The Spectacular Now director James Ponsoldt at the helm. Set in the modern digital world, The Circle orients itself around Emma Watson’s Mae Holland, a relative newcomer to the Google-inspired technological behemoth called Circle. Excited to be a part of such an influential company, her enthusiasm soon wears off as she realizes that all is not what it seems.

In his first role after Boyhood, Coltrane will be tackling the part of her ex-boyfriend “who tries to go off the grid and under the radar of the Circle’s technology.” What exactly this entails is being kept under wraps – unless you’ve read the book – but whatever the case, his first dip back into the acting pool ought to be reason enough to catch his upcoming performance.

Also on board for what’s destined to be a thrilling tale is quite the array of Hollywood big-hitters, including Tom Hanks, Ex-machina‘s Alicia Vikander, The Force Awakens‘ John Boyega and recent addition Karen Gillan. There’s no release date confirmed as yet for this powerhouse of talent, but we’ll keep you posted when any new updates land for The Circle.

When Mae Holland is hired to work for Circle, the world’s most powerful internet company, she feels she’s been given the opportunity of a lifetime. The Circle, run out of a sprawling California campus, links users’ personal emails, social media, banking, and purchasing with their universal operating system, resulting in one online identity and a new age of civility and transparency.
