Despite the mixed reception to The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Andrew Garfield’s acting career definitely hasn’t taken too much of a hit, as he recently finished working with Martin Scorsese and will also soon be seen in Mel Gibson’s Hacksaw Ridge. The British actor has actually landed the lead role in the World War II set movie and will star alongside Vince Vaughn, Sam Worthington, Luke Bracey, Teresa Palmer and Rachel Griffiths.
The film will see him playing a solider who was ostracized and made to serve as a medic in the Pacific for his refusal to carry a weapon after being drafted into the army, only to later be branded a hero after saving an entire unit of allied troops.
Here’s the official synopsis for the film:
Hacksaw Ridge is the extraordinary true story of conscientious objector Desmond Doss (Garfield) who, in Okinawa during the bloodiest battle of WWII, saved 75 men without firing a gun. Believing that the War was just but killing was nevertheless wrong, he was the only American soldier in WWII to fight on the front lines without a weapon.
“While production has only just begun, there is already incredible camaraderie between the cast,” director Mel Gibson said in a statement released alongside the first look image you see above earlier today. “Not only is Andrew perfect for the role of Desmond Doss, the entire cast are an incredible mix of experience, depth and exciting up and coming talent.”
