It’s been a very long time since we got an update on Krypton, the planned Superman prequel TV series which – as you’ve likely already guessed – is going to be set on the Man of Steel’s home planet. However, very little is known about the show other than the fact that it’s heading to SyFy and David Goyer will serve as executive producer.

Well, Goyer has now revealed that Krypton will be set roughly 200 years before the destruction of the planet, and while we have no idea whether or not the show will have any ties to Man of Steel, the writer of that movie went on to explain why he’s excited to get the chance to further expand on the workings of the planet that we only briefly glimpsed back in 2013.

“Part of the fun of doing Man of Steel — and I was so insistent on setting that opening on Krypton and really seeing it, was pulling back the curtain. The first draft, the first forty pages were on Krypton, so we compressed that all down to fifteen minutes and there were a lot of ideas that I wanted to use in the film that didn’t ultimately make it into the film.”

As for how a sci-fi series like Krypton is going to work on a TV budget, Goyer went on to explain:

“In terms of production value, you have to pick your moments. It will definitely, should we make the show there will definitely be some big moments. It won’t be wall to wall visual effects every single moment, spectacle, in the way that the film will be, but we’ll also be digging into the characters and the culture a lot more.”

An argument could be made that Krypton is completely unnecessary, but many people said the same about Gotham when it was announced, and it’s ended up being a real hit for Fox. We’ll just have to wait and see if that will be the case here, but so far, I’m feeling optimistic.
