As of right now, much of Captain America: Civil War is a mystery, but directors Joe and Anthony Russo have now at least shed some light on a few things we should expect to see in the first Marvel Phase 3 movie. For starters, they addressed Black Panther’s role, revealing that he shows up fairly early on and doesn’t necessarily choose a side in the conflict between Captain America and Iron Man.
“Black Panther is, first of all, an amazing character. We couldn’t be more excited to bring him to the screen for the first time. He’s very central to the story. He comes into the story pretty early, but what’s great about Black Panther in this film is all the other characters break down into two sides – Captain America’s side and Iron Man’s side. Black Panther never quite chooses a side, he’s sort of on his own side for the whole movie which makes him very cool in this storytelling.”
In the Civil War comic book, Black Panther remained neutral, and it sounds like he’ll very much be out for himself in Captain America: Civil War. However, the fact he was fighting Bucky and being chased down by Captain America in the trailer definitely points to him siding with Tony Stark for at least a little while.
[zergpaid]As for some of Captain America: Civil War‘s other supporting characters, Anthony went on to confirm that Ant-Man and Spider-Man have been included as a way of helping to lighten up this otherwise dark and very serious movie.
“Not all the characters in the movie have the same investment in the conflict. There are certain characters that come into the story a little later who don’t have the same baggage that the Avengers have in terms of what’s going on in the film. So they don’t have as much darkness to deal with in the film, so they can be a little lighter and more fun. I think the movie has a healthy balance between very serious, interesting and very surprising storytelling, and sort of light, fun wits and humor.”
These two heroes bringing some laughs to the movie makes perfect sense, and it’s definitely the best way to handle them. Both Spidey and Ant-Man will no doubt have some serious moments, too, but using them to lighten the tone in Captain America: Civil War is a smart move on Marvel’s part and one that should work out quite well for the film.
