Star Wars Battlefront Sells Over 12 Million Units

It will probably come as no surprise that EA’s Star Wars Battlefront has been a big hit. Just like J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens, it was a sure-fire success from the moment it was announced. Even though the game received its fair share of mediocre reviews, the majority criticizing its lack of depth and content, fans still haven’t been able to resist the lure of the force, with the game managing to shift between 12-13 million units since its release in November.

It will probably come as no surprise that EA’s Star Wars Battlefront has been a big hit. Just like J.J. Abrams’ The Force Awakens, it was a sure-fire success from the moment it was announced. Even though the game received a few too many mediocre reviews, the majority criticizing its lack of depth and content, fans still haven’t been able to resist the lure of the force, with the game managing to shift between 12-13 million units since its release in November.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter told Fortune that approximately 6 million copies of Star Wars Battlefront were sold in November and that a further 6 million were sold in December. In total, the game, with its $55 average price tag, is believed to have garnered $660 million in revenue.

The senior research analyst at Pacific Crest Securities, Evan Wilson, estimated that the total number of sales is probably closer to 13 million, but a lot of these sales were made at a discounted price.

Meanwhile, the Star Wars-based Disney Infinity 3.0 has now risen to the status of highest-selling toys-to-life game, all thanks to its new The Force Awakens Play Set, which is the closest thing to an official movie tie-in game fans are going to get. Pachter estimates that Disney has sold over $200 million worth of Infinity’s Star Wars-themed figurines and games over the fall period. This places it well above its two main competitors, Skylanders and Lego Dimensions, who are both thought to have generated around $150 million.

Also making the most of Jedi fever are several mobile games. Randy Nelson, the content manager of Sensor Tower’s store intelligence platform, told Fortune that EA’s mobile game Star Wars: Galaxy Of Heroes, Konami’s Star Wars: Force Collection, and Disney’s Star Wars: Commander–Worlds In Conflict have altogether amassed over $285,000 in the first day after the launch of The Force Awakens film.

This all just goes to show that there is no denying the audience pull of a beloved franchise, and Star Wars is arguably the most beloved franchise of them all.
