Netflix announced today at TCA that Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt will be returning for a third season. The confirmation of a third-season pick-up comes ahead of the show’s second season, which was also announced to premiere this spring, on April 15, just over a year after season one’s March debut.
The half-hour sitcom was always envisioned by creators Tina Fey and Robert Carlock as at least a two season story, but it should be comforting for fans of the show to hear that Netflix has continued plans for the series beyond 2016’s sophomore year. Originally, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt was pitched to NBC, but was snatched up by Netflix after NBC decided not to pick it up for a full series.
Besides the confirmation, there was no news regarding the status of Fey and Carlock’s continued status as showrunners on the series, which is understandable given that details about the second season have only just started to trickle out.
For those who have yet to watch, the show follows the trials of Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper), who travels to New York City after being tramped in a bunker for fifteen years. There, she befriends a new roommate (Titus Burgess), gets a job working for a rich housewife (Jane Krakowski), and tries to move past being known only as a “mole woman.”
Recent scoop on the show’s second year hints at a consistent romantic interest for Kimmy throughout the season, instead of the trail of potential boyfriends she encountered last year. She’ll also be branching out beyond her household nanny job for Jacqueline and into other environments, including a holiday elf at a department store.
