As the somber voiceover notes, “when the day becomes the night, when the sky becomes the sea, when the clock strikes heavy and there’s no time for tea. And in the darkest hour, before my final rhyme, she will come back home to Wonderland and turn back the hands of time.”

Behind the lens for Through the Looking Glass is James Bobin. Picking up the reins from Tim Burton, Bobin’s fantasy prequel is more of an extension to Disney’s cherished world, sending Wasikowska’s lead on a journey through time to meet new friends – and foes – most notable of all is Rhys Ifans’ Zanik Hightopp, father to Depp’s whimsical character.

Along for the journey are Helena Bonhan Carter and Anne Hathaway as the Red Queen and White Queen, respectively, while Alice Through the Looking Glass will also feature Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat, Michael Sheen’s White Rabbit, and the late, great Alan Rickman as Absolem.

Alice Through the Looking Glass serves up a healthy dose of madness on May 27 – opening opposite Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, no less.

Director James Bobin brings his own unique vision to the spectacular world Tim Burton created on screen in 2010 with “Alice in Wonderland,” in which Alice (Wasikowska) returns to the whimsical world of Underland and travels back in time to save the Mad Hatter. The film, which once again features Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter and the voices of Alan Rickman, Stephen Fry, Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall, introduces several new characters as well: Zanik Hightopp (Rhys Ifans), the Mad Hatter’s father, and Time.
