In the months since the initial release of Super Mario Maker, Nintendo has been impressively dedicated in providing updates and new content for the acclaimed level creation game, and today’s Nintendo Direct was the perfect place to announce details for the game’s next major patch, which will be downloadable on March 9 and contain some cool new additions for level creators and players alike.

One of the most addicting features in the game is the 100-Mario Challenge, which tasks players with beating a randomized selection of user-created levels categorized into Easy, Normal and Expert difficulties with 100 lives. Those looking for a true challenge will soon get it in the form of the new Super Expert mode, which will unlock with the update for anyone who has beaten an Expert playthrough.

Though only six levels long, it sounds like the levels contained will demand quite a lot. As with the other modes, successful playthroughs will result in more unlockable costumes for the Mystery Mushroom powerup, with the first new skin being Tetra from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker.

Level creators will now have the ability to use the gigantic spiked skewers from Super Mario World as an alternate version of Thwomps, along with the interesting addition of locked doors requiring a key, which can be placed in the environment, item blocks, or defeated enemies. The new pink coin item can also be used to reward players with a key when all of the uniquely shaped coins are collected, encouraging exploration and inventive new level designs.

Tell us, are you still playing Super Mario Maker? If so, are you looking forward to the new patch?
