Superbad cast members Emma Stone and Jonah Hill have been cast in Maniac, a new TV series from Cary Fukunaga, who directed the entire first season of True Detective (you know, the good one). The show will be based off of a 2014 Norwegian comedy series of the same name, and is currently on the hunt for a showrunner.

The American version of Maniac is being produced by Paramount Television and Anonymous Content and, in addition to a writer to tie everything together, the series is currently looking for a network home. Here’s a quick synopsis of the original Norwegian version of the show:

The original Maniac revolves around Espen, a mental patient at the psychiatric ward who escapes reality and lives in a fantasy world in his mind.

Sounds like it wouldn’t only be dark, but require a hefty, high-concept budget. Given that Fukunaga won an Emmy for his work on True Detective for HBO, there’s a possibility the dark comedy series could end up there. But without even a writer yet on board, the show is obviously in very early stages, so it’s hard to be sure where it’ll land.

Do you think Maniac has the potential to be another hit for Fukunaga? Let us know in the comments below.
