Placing a laser focus on the disastrous BP oil spill of 2010, Peter Berg’s (Lone Survivor) environmental actioner thrusts Mark Wahlberg into the Gulf of Mexico where, unbeknownst to him, the crew of an American oil rig will be left facing the biggest man-made disaster in modern history.

But what today’s trailer does so well is introducing us to a time before the sea-floor oil gusher ruptured, expertly allowing an endearing family breakfast to run in parallel with action shots pulled from when the shit hits the fan. Breaking down the minutia of deep-sea drilling in layman’s terms, the opening involves Wahlberg’s blue-collar worker and his daughter using a Coke can – Independence Day, eat your heart out – to illustrate the process involved in extracting crude oil from the planet’s crust.

When disaster eventually strikes, it strikes hard. Striving to translate the heroism onto the big screen are Deepwater Horizon writers Matthew Michael Carnahan and Matthew Sand. As for the core cast, Wahlberg and Kate Hudson are joined by Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, Dylan O’Brien, and Golden Globe-winner Gina Rodriguez.

Deepwater Horizon will dock in theaters and IMAX screens come September 30.
