Revelling in the same ‘70s style as last week’s wonderfully retro trailer, Warner Bros. has premiered a series of character posters for The Nice Guys, introducing the supporting players of Shane Black’s soon-to-be-released crime noir.

A decorated expert in the buddy cop sub-genre after working across the likes of Lethal Weapon and The Last Boy Scout, Black’s latest places Ryan Gosling and Russel Crowe into the heart of 1970s Los Angeles, as they walk the neon-drenched street in search of a missing girl.

On the one hand, Gosling will play down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March, who struggles to make any impact in a city that never sleeps. Crowe, meanwhile, is Jackson Healy, the archetypal muscle and hired enforcer that balances the brains with the brawn. A familiar dynamic though that may be, those trailers and snippets for The Nice Guys trumpet a hilarious sense of chemistry between Black’s leading men.

They’ll be taking to downtown LA soon, when the director’s latest forces them to “work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. During their investigation, they uncover a shocking conspiracy that reaches up to the highest circles of power.” Angourie Rice, Matt Bomer, Margaret Qualley, Keith David and Kim Basinger are among the supporting players featured in the gallery above.

Shane Black’s The Nice Guys will open for business – and make their theatrical debut – on May 20 in the States. Once Gosling and Crowe are dispatched, next up for Black is a modern take on the Predator franchise in time for 2018.
