X-Men: Apocalypse finally reached North America yesterday evening and debuted with $8.2 million. That figure puts it slightly ahead of X-Men: Days of Future Past, as that film came in a bit lower with $8.1 million back in 2014. While not wildly impressive, these numbers still point to good things to come for the Bryan Singer-helmed release after its $100 million opening overseas last week.
Made for $178 million (that’s $12 million less than Days of Future Past and likely due to the smaller, lesser-known cast), it’s hard to say what kind of legs X-Men: Apocalypse will have, especially as reviews have been considerably more mixed than for previous instalments in the long running franchise. Most analysts seem to believe it will earn upwards of $700 million, and that’s probably pretty accurate.
As of right now, the movie looks set to have an opening weekend of around $90 million, a strong start for sure, but a figure not exactly helped by competition from Alice Through the Looking Glass. That film will likely earn only $40 million this weekend, but a lot of parents are obviously going to be taking their kids to Disney’s latest instead of X-Men: Apocalypse.
Regardless, Singer’s newest addition to the franchise is sure to spawn another trilogy, and Fox will more than likely be alright with these numbers, even if they were probably hoping for over $1 billion.
