Vying for the coveted position at the helm of Lincoln High, HBO’s new half-hour comedy is set to make its bow on the small-screen soon after Ballers season 2 on July 17, offering viewers a refreshing palette cleanser after a season spent on the sun-kissed beaches of Miami.

An old-fashioned standoff at its core, the official logline for the series – one hatched by Eastbound & Down‘s Danny McBride and Jody Hill – introduces Vice Principals as “a dark comedy series that tells the story of a high school and the two people who almost run it, the vice principals. McBride and Goggins star as the rival administrators, who are in an epic power struggle, vying for the top spot: to be school principal.”

Also starring Georgia King, Busy Philipps, Kimberly Hebert Gregory, Sheaun McKinney and Shea Whigham – despite a neat cameo, we’re guessing Bill Murray only makes an appearance in the pilot – Vice Principals has assembled quite the cast to flank McBride and Goggins’ hyper-competitive leads, and the fact that the network has handed out a two-season order means we can retain a sense of cautious optimism going into next month’s premiere.

HBO has earmarked the Vice Principals premiere for July 17, when Danny McBride and Walton Goggins will be ripping up the rulebook – and curriculum – across two seasons comprising 18 episodes in total.
