Given all the headlines that Suicide Squad has been making lately, it’s hardly surprising that FOX’s Gotham is looking to capitalize on the popularity of Task Force X. In a move that was pretty much expected, the show’s EPs announced today at the TCA Press Tour that they’ll be bringing Harley Quinn and Killer Croc to the titular city either this season or next.
There’s a catch, though. Like all of the other characters on the show, these will be proto-versions, meaning they’re the early versions of the characters who will eventually become the villains that we know from the comics. Think Jerome from season 2 of Gotham and you’ll understand what we mean (as that character is set to become the Joker).
“A lot of those characters, because they’re in Suicide Squad, we’re not going to be seeing them this season. We will be seeing proto-versions of some of those characters; we’ll see a proto-Killer Croc version. And we’ll be seeing a character — perhaps not this season, but in times to come — who can be a forerunner for Harley Quinn.”
In regards to Jerome, the producers intend to keep developing him as well, saying the following about his arc:
“It’s about developing the myth of the Joker, just like we’re developing the myth of Batman. It’s so we can stretch him over multiple seasons. The cult of The Joker began, and we’ll explore how that deepens and changes this year. There are underground movements where they talk about Jerome.”
Along with all that, and a look at Poison Ivy which dropped earlier today, it was also confirmed that Fish Mooney will appear in the first two episodes of the new season, and then return for the second half in the spring.
So, a lot to look forward to with Gotham then, which is good to see. It’s been a bit of a rocky road for the Batman prequel, but things have begun to pick up and with the plans that the producers seem to have for their show, it looks like it will only continue to get better from here.
