After plenty of reveals and previews, Dontnod Entertainment, best known for their work on Remember Me, and more recently, the critically acclaimed Life is Strange, have finally pulled back the curtain on their upcoming title, Vampyr. While a concept teaser for the game was revealed last year, news and information has been rather slow to surface. However, earlier today, Dontnod released a brand new trailer, which shows off close to 15 minutes of gameplay.
For the uninitiated, Vampyr is set in London during the year 1918, a period where the city’s inhabitants are subject to a rather nasty strain of influenza. Of course, this parallels real world events, mirroring the Spanish Flu epidemic that broke out as the events of World War I were drawing to a close. The outbreak claimed the lives of over 50 million people, with over 500 million infected at some point or another.
During these events, the player takes control of Jonathan Reid, a vampire who keeps up appearances by continuing to play the role of doctor to the infected population of London. Using his vampiric powers, Reid has the ability to detect whether or not someone is infected with the flu. By eavesdropping in on other conversations and searching for clues, the player can form a better picture of those around him. In the final version of the game, Dr. Reid will be able to spare or kill characters, which will shape the course of the game’s story.
Vampyr is set to release next year, for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PCs. Until then, be sure to check out our preview of the game from our time at E3 2016.
