Supernatural Season 12 Promo Arrives As Cast Hope To Reach 300 Episodes

After a slew of series aired on The CW - mostly superhero ones - had trailers released at San Diego Comic-Con this past July and the weeks following, I couldn't help but notice a lack of representation for Supernatural. With its twelfth season set to kickoff in just over a month's time, we have finally been treated to the first trailer, which can be viewed at the top.

After a slew of series aired on The CW – mostly superhero ones – had trailers released at San Diego Comic-Con this past July and the weeks following, I couldn’t help but notice a lack of representation for Supernatural. With its twelfth season set to kickoff in just over a month’s time, we’ve finally been treated to the first trailer, which can be viewed at the top of the page.

In it, we see Dean Winchester and his recently resurrected mother, Mary, put their heads together in an attempt to find a missing Sam, who is being shown a less than desirable display of hospitality by an international chapter of the Men of Letters. Be sure to also keep your eyes open for Rick Springfield, who is set to play the first of several vessels to be inhabited by Lucifer throughout this season.

While the series’ 200th episode, “Fan Fiction,” may still be fresh in everyone’s memories, the cast and crew are already looking ahead to a possible 300th. Jensen Ackles said as much when recently speaking with Entertainment Weekly:

“In a marathon, I keep my sights on that next mile, wherever that might be. And 300’s a good number to work for.”

Supernatural currently has 241 episodes under its belt and a hopeful 300th would coincidentally by the 13th episode of Season 14. Anyone familiar with how seasons of television are structured knows that 13 or 22 episode seasons are the standard – or 23 if you’re one of The CW’s top shows like this one.

The timing isn’t lost on executive producer Robert Singer, who had this to say:

“We talked about wanting to be able to know when our end was, and if it was to be, let’s say, 300 episodes, we could tell a 13-episode story. I think it would be bad for this show to just ride off in the sunset without a finale. I think we’ve earned that. I don’t know what that finale is, but we’d certainly like to do one.”

Having a milestone episode act as a series finale would be a way to go out with a bang, to say the least. All I ask it that the eventual conclusion be as befitting as Season 5’s finale, “Swan Song,” which was the originally planned ending by series creator Eric Kripke.

But if the powers that be won’t do it for we the fans, do it for Jared Padalecki, who really wants to hit that zenith:

“If we don’t make it to 300, I think Ackles and I will both be truly bummed. When we get to 300, I think Ackles and I will think it might be time to say bye. There’s a chance that changes, but we certainly do not take it for granted that we’re going to make it to 300.”

Supernatural returns for its twelfth season on Thursday, October 13 on The CW.
