Ask any sci-fi fan worth their salt and you’ll likely discover a deep and abiding reverence for Sigourney Weaver. This is, after all, the actress that wowed a generation with her defining role as Ellen Ripley across both Alien and its action-packed sequel Aliens – a role in Ghostbusters laid the groundwork for that breakout – and since then, Weaver continues to strike a chord with moviegoing audiences, be it in Simon Pegg and Nick Frost’s heartfelt Paul or a bit-part in this year’s Finding Dory.

Sure, she has has played the hero rather brilliantly all throughout the Alien universe – and hopes to soon continue that streak via Neill Blomkamp’s shelved Alien 5 – but if a passing comment by Weaver herself is any indication, the actress may be headed for the realm of costumed heroes.

First spotted by MCUExchange, the actress was quizzed about the potential onset of franchise fatigue in Hollywood during an interview with WIRED, leading conversation to veer toward superheroes. It was here that Weaver heaped praise on the calibre of talent featured across the Marvel Cinematic Universe, before revealing that she’s been catching up on the movies during her downtime. Why? It’s classified, apparently.

Here’s an extract from Wired’s report:

“I can’t tell you!” she says. Fair enough, but she will say she’s enthralled by the work Marvel is doing, and by the performers populating their ever-expanding universes. “How can you relate to someone flying around with a cape?” she asks. “That takes work.”

A red herring? Or is there something more at play? To date, the MCU has enlisted some truly top-tier talent – Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, Scarlett Johansson – across its many installments, and Sigourney Weaver would certainly fit into the bracket of A-listers.

Next up for Marvel is the release of Doctor Strange on November 4 – perhaps Weaver, like us, has simply been binge-watching previous MCU films in preparation for the advent of the Sorcerer Supreme?
