Cuphead, the old-timey side-scrolling platformer in the works from Studio MDHR, has officially been bumped into 2017.

Word comes by way of the developer’s latest blog post, confirming that the stylized indie title will now make its bow across Xbox One, Steam, and Windows 10 midway through next year. Inspired by 1930s cartoons, Cuphead was initially designed to be a boss-rush title, before Studio MDHR chose to implement some platforming aspects to create a classic run and gun action game while still maintaining that focus on boss encounters.

According to today’s status report, Cuphead was pushed out of its 2016 release window so that the development team have time to flesh out the core game. The post mentions how the studio came close to reducing the scope of the old-fashioned platformer in order to make the late-2016 release date, before ultimately deciding to postpone the new IP to do good by the original vision.

Per Studio MDHR:

Throughout this year we discussed reducing the scope to make a 2016 release, but we made the difficult decision to delay the launch in order to ship with our vision intact. We are happy to announce that Cuphead will be coming to Xbox One, Windows 10 and Steam in Mid-2017.

We are constantly humbled by your continued support. Love you all and can’t wait to get this to you. Without further ado, we will get back to work!

In light of today’s postponement, Cuphead will now make a beeline for Xbox One and PC via Steam mid-way through 2017 but make no mistake, this is an old-school indie that should absolutely be on your radar.
