Watson’s A Father In These Sherlock Season 4 Photos

Though it's without a doubt one of the best things on television at the moment, Sherlock never quite sticks around for long enough. With just three episodes per season and the odd special here and there, it's that rare, elusive treat that's undeniably delicious when you have it but makes you angry as soon as it's gone, as you know that it'll be one hell of a long time before you get it again.

Though it’s without a doubt one of the best things on television at the moment, Sherlock never quite sticks around for long enough. With just three episodes per season and the odd special here and there, it’s that rare, elusive treat that’s undeniably delicious when you have it but makes you angry as soon as it’s gone, as you know that it’ll be one hell of a long time before you get it again.

That’s why we’re so excited for January 1st, as the show’s fourth season will premiere to help us celebrate the new year in style. From what we’re hearing, it’s going to be a pretty exciting outing for the iconic detective. Not only will Watson now be a father, as evidenced by the photos above, but there’s a new villain to contend with in the form of Culverton Smith, played by Toby Jones (who you can also glimpse in this new batch of images).

It’s Smith that’s perhaps the most exciting part of this season, as Executive Producer Steven Moffatt has teased that not only will the new episodes be amongst the darkest yet, but that Smith is also one of the darkest villains they’ve ever had:

He’s completely different. It’s a completely different. He’s the darkest villain we’ve had. There was always something charming and engaging about Moriarty. There was something fascinating and actually amoral, rather than immoral, about Charles Augustus Magnussen. This guy is the purest evil. Sherlock is actually appalled by him. He’s the most evil villain we’ve had. I don’t think that when you see it, you will disagree. He’s horrific.

Season 4 of Sherlock will kick off with “The Six Thatchers” on January 1st, 2017. You better make sure to tune in, too, as it may be the last outing we get for the character. Star Benedict Cumberbatch has revealed that his increasingly busy film schedule may just put an end to his time on the show, and given how well his debut as Marvel’s Doctor Strange was received, we’re inclined to believe him.
