Though viewers were treated to Victorian-themed spinoff The Abominable Bride almost a year ago, the wait for Sherlock season 4 has been a long one. Much of that comes down to the three-episode structure of Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss’ award-winning drama, but the fact that season 3 ended on such a teasing note has ensured excitement for Sherlock has remained close to a fever-pitch ever since Moriarty’s cackle rang out from beyond the grave. Or did it?
That’s just one of the major talking points going into the show’s fourth – and potentially final – season, and the BBC has now unveiled a new promo that showcases Mr. Holmes (Benedict Cumberbatch) and Martin Freeman (John Watson) in a flooded 221B Baker Street. Could this be lifted from Sherlock‘s mind palace? We’re inclined to believe so. One element of Sherlock season 4 that is rooted in reality is the advent of Watson and Mary’s baby, much to the dismay of Cumberbatch’s prickly protagonist.
A fresh-faced newborn is the only cause for concern, however, with Sherlock season 4 set to tee up a clash between our iconic detective and Culverton Smith, played here by Toby Jones. Considered the show’s darkest villain yet, co-showrunner Steven Moffat has warned fans well in advance that Smith is a truly horrific character, and though Sherlock had enjoyed a warped sense of competition from his run-in with Moriarty, Cumberbatch’s title lead is said to be completely appalled by Smith’s actions. Strap in, folks – it’s going to get bumpy.
In what could be the end of an era, Sherlock season 4 will kick off with the premiere of “The Six Thatchers” across BBC One/Masterpiece on January 1, 2017.
