Earlier today, the world lost Carrie Fisher. It was a tragic loss and one that just about everyone is feeling, especially Star Wars fans. The actress had suffered a heart attack last week but was said to be in stable condition, which is why the news of her death at age 60 is incredibly shocking.
The last time audiences saw Fisher on the big screen was in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, where she reprised her role as Princess Leia Organa. She was also set to appear in the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VIII as well and according to TMZ, that’s still the case, as Fisher had finished filming all of her scenes before her untimely death.
So while we know that we’ll see her in the next chapter of the saga, what we’re unsure of is how Carrie passing away will impact the franchise moving forward. That’s because we don’t know how her arc ends in Episode VIII. It’s very possible that the character dies or is written out of the story by the end of the film and thus, wouldn’t be needed for Episode IX.
If, however, she’s still around by the end of Rian Johnson’s upcoming sci-fi outing and the studio planned to continue her arc in the next entry, then there’s obviously going to need to be some re-writes to accommodate for what’s happened. It’s still too early to say for sure how Carrie Fisher’s tragic death will impact the franchise as a whole in the years to come, but fans can rest assured knowing that she’ll definitely still be in Star Wars: Episode VIII.
