We always knew Thor: Ragnarok was going to be a huge event movie – it has the God of Thunder and Hulk locking horns, all set against Asgard’s downfall, for crying out loud – but the film’s first official synopsis has arrived online to drive that point home.
First spotted by Stitch Kingdom (via CBM), Ragnarok‘s story snippet teases the advent of Hela, Cate Blanchett’s all-powerful deity, along with a “deadly gladiatorial contest” involving both Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk. Such a narrative arc will allow Thor: Ragnarok to tap into the beloved Planet Hulk storyline, but it’s really the imminent downfall of Asgard that will surely act as the threequel’s centerpiece. Interestingly, there’s no mention of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme, who was just recently confirmed for Taika Waititi’s November tentpole. Don’t let his absence from the official cast list fool you, though, as Marvel often keeps minor cameo roles off the docket to maintain some semblance of mystery.

“In Marvel Studios’ Thor: Ragnarok. Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – the Incredible Hulk!
“Thor: Ragnarok is directed by Taika Waititi and returns Chris Hemsworth starring as Thor and Tom Hiddleston reprising his role as Loki. They are joined by Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson and Karl Urban, with Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins.”
Aiming to capture some retro sci-fi for Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi spoke in the past about the overall tone of his superhero blockbuster, even comparing it to that of The Winter Soldier for its deft balance of character drama and levity. This, coupled with the promise of more screentime for Thor and Hulk’s often hilarious interplay, has us cautiously optimistic that Ragnarok could well go down as the best Thor movie yet.
