It’s been a bit hit and miss for Marvel when it comes to the small screen. For every knockout like Daredevil, there’s also a letdown like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Not that it’s necessarily a horrible television show, but it certainly hasn’t lived up to its potential and the ratings are proof of that. However, the studio keeps trucking on and in the near future, they’ll be bringing us two new series. One is The Runaways, which is set to debut on Hulu, while the other is Cloak And Dagger, which is coming to Freeform and heads into production next month.
It’s the latter which we have an update for today, as a director for the pilot has been found in the form of Gina Prince-Bythewood. Though we don’t know if she’ll remain on board after the first episode, she will helm the opener and that’s certainly promising news. Perhaps best known for Love & Basketball and Beyond the Lights, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw, she’s got some television experience too, having written for Felicity and A Different World. Of course, it’s also nice to see a talented female director getting a big gig like this.
For those unfamiliar with the source material, Cloak and Dagger follows two NYC teenagers, Tandy Bowen and Tyrone Johnson, “from different backgrounds who grapple with newly acquired superpowers – Tandy can emit daggers of light, while Tyrone can engulf others in darkness – even as they fall in love.” It’s set to be aimed at a YA audience and while it may not be the biggest or most well known of Marvel’s properties, the studio sees a lot of potential in it from what we’ve heard.
Cloak and Dagger will premiere on Freeform in 2018. No cast has been attached just yet, but word is that Marvel is aiming for relative unknowns to play Tandy and Tyrone. As soon as we hear more, we’ll be sure to let you know!
