When Making a Murderer arrived on Netflix at the end of 2015, it created an absolute storm, captivating viewers with its riveting story and encouraging people to stand up and demand justice. Not to mention it also inspired several other fantastic shows that peeled back the layers on true crime cases. As such, it really wasn’t too surprising when the streaming service ordered up a second season.
While we still don’t have an exact premiere date just yet, Netflix has confirmed this week that Making a Murderer will return at some point in 2017. Original Content VP Cindy Holland said that “we don’t know for sure when new episodes will be coming,” but revealed that production is already underway.
“Laura and Moira are (in Manitowoc) shooting regularly and working on what the right story is to tell in the next set, so we’re deferring to them on when it will be ready. Very few people inside of Netflix actually know the details of what we’re getting because we’re wanting to keep it really under wraps and it is an ongoing case so we’re trying to be sensitive to that.”
What’s interesting to note here is that Holland says that the details of season 2 are being kept under wraps. This suggests that they may be choosing to focus on an entirely new case rather than re-visit the story of Steven Avery. They could, of course, pick back up with him and continue his tale, but it sounds like they may be shifting the spotlight elsewhere, which wouldn’t necessarily be a bad idea.
It’s no secret that there are more than enough compelling cases out there that a show like this could really dive into and after an entire season focused on Avery, viewers would probably welcome a new story to explore. Whether or not they’ll get that remains to be seen, but if there’s one thing that’s for certain, it’s that we will definitely be getting more Making a Murderer later this year.
