In fear that the über-popular sci-fi series will overstay its welcome, Stranger Things co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer believe that the Netflix original currently has enough mileage in the tank to last four or five seasons before bowing off the airwaves for good.
Word comes by way of Entertainment Weekly, where Ross Duffer stressed that, when it comes to the remaining episode count, nothing is concrete just yet: “Everything changes as we move forward so we’ll see.” Currently gearing up for its sophomore run, the Powers That Be over at Netflix will no doubt want to ensure Stranger Things remains a mainstay of the streamer’s digital portfolio for as long as possible.
That being said, in bouncing off his brother’s comments, Matt Duffer noted that the creative team involved in Stranger Things – executive producer Shawn Levy included – have envisioned a four-to-five season arc for Will, Dustin, Eleven, Mike, Lucas and the rest of the gang. Essentially, don’t expect Netflix’s fan-favorite to stretch into double figures in the vein of, say, Dexter, or The Big Bang Theory, or How I Met Your Mother, or any other TV show that arguably dragged its feet on recycled ideas and hackneyed storytelling towards the end of its respective run.
Said Matt Duffer:
“I want it to have a really finite ending. I don’t want it to be one of those shows that runs out of gas and they lose it because they’re losing interest. You wanna end when you’re on top.”
When it comes to concocting a fitting conclusion to Stranger Things, it looks like the Duffer Brothers will take a leaf out of Orphan Black‘s book – that is, to engineer a series finale that sends off a beloved set of characters while they’re on top.
