From nothing comes a king: Warner Bros. has today premiered the fantastical new trailer for King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword, Guy Ritchie’s star-studded medieval reboot that repackages Arthur and the Excalibur myth for a modern-day audience.
Thrusting former Sons of Anarchy star Charlie Hunnam into the title role, Legend of the Sword has been pitched as the “extreme” version of the famous English yarn, chronicling Arthur’s trajectory from the streets to the throne. If there’s one major hurdle standing in his way, it’s Jude Law’s (The Young Pope) Vortigern, a power-mongering tyrant who not only murdered Arthur’s parents in cold blood, but also stole made off with his crown. What follows is a rip-roaring quest for revenge, as Hunnam’s fearless leader begins to grapple with the spellbinding powers of Excalibur and, ultimately, stage a revolt against Vortigern and everything he represents.
Beyond Arthur and his medieval journey, today’s new trailer could well be the first of many from Warner Bros. in the coming weeks, what with reports suggesting that the studio is set to attach the final Wonder Woman trailer to James Mangold’s critically-adorned Logan on March 3rd.
Rounding out the cast list for Legend of the Sword are Astrid Bergès-Frisbey as Mage; Oscar nominee Djimon Hounsou as Bedivere; Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) as Goosefat Bill and Eric Bana as Arthur’s father, King Uther Pendragon.
Directing from a screenplay he penned alongside Joby Harold and Lionel Wigram, Guy Ritchie will shepherd King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword into theaters on May 12th.
When the child Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern, Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy…whether he likes it or not.
