Not only is Beauty and the Beast all set to become a bona fide mega-hit for Disney in two weeks’ time, but online ticket leader Fandango has now revealed that Bill Condon’s enchanting reboot is well on its way to becoming the fastest-selling family film ever, beating the record previously held by last year’s Finding Dory.
Word comes by way of Entertainment Weekly, where Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis noted that “Beauty is a beast in presales, and I think it’s going to surprise a lot of people. It’s looking bigger than most Disney live-action adaptations, like The Jungle Book, Cinderella, or Maleficent. Its presales rival those of a superhero movie.”
As a matter of fact, Beauty and the Beast is outpacing Captain America: Civil War in ticket presales, with many showtimes selling out in anticipation of Disney’s live-action reimagining gracing theaters on March 17th. For the sake of perspective, Civil War went on to score an eye-watering $180 million during its opening weekend, and if Beauty is able to land anywhere in that same ballpark, Bill Condon’s star-studded reboot will go down as a landmark achievement for the Mouse House. That’s not to say that these box office forecasts are all that surprising; after all, a Fandango survey ranked Beauty and the Beast as the third most-anticipated film of 2017, behind only Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
All will be revealed when Beauty and the Beast graces theaters worldwide on March 17th. It’s the latest in a long line of live-action remakes from Disney, what with plans in place for The Lion King, Cruella, Mulan and a follow-up to Jon Favreau’s wildly successful redo of The Jungle Book.
