As Hollywood’s summer season inches closer and closer, the Internet has been awash with blistering new trailers over the past few days as studios begin to show their wares in anticipation of the industry’s most competitive corridor. We’ve already caught new looks at The Fate of the Furious, Wonder Woman and, more recently, Edgar Wright’s rip-roaring Baby Driver and now, it’s Paramount’s turn to take the mic.
The studio is currently on the verge of launching Ghost in the Shell into theaters (March 31st is the date for your diaries), but over the weekend, Paramount not only rolled out the very first clip for Transformers: The Last Knight, but also an extended TV spot that essentially paints Optimus Prime and Bumblebee – undoubtedly the two robotic anchors of Michael Bay’s blockbuster franchise – as dangerous outlaws. Once a bastion of hope for humanity, it seems that by the time The Last Knight opens, those iconic robots in disguise are no longer wanted on Earth.
This blowback seeds the creation of an underground resistance of sorts, with the clip below illustrating how newcomer Isabela Moner – on board to play Izabella – maintains an amicable relationship with the Transformers, despite their status as wanted criminals. Elsewhere, the extended TV spot teases the return of Mark Wahlberg’s Cade Yeager and Grimlock, the towering Tyrannosaurus and leader of the Dinobots.
On June 23rd, Optimus Prime and Bumblebee will go up against a threat the likes of which they’ve never faced: each other. Beyond Transformers: The Last Knight, we understand Paramount has also nailed down plans for a Bumblebee-centric spinoff – one to be directed by Travis Knight – along with a sixth mainline installment in the blockbuster juggernaut, the latter of which is eyeing a release in 2019. Whether Michael Bay returns at the helm, though, is another question entirely.
