Not only is Charlie Hunnam’s would-be leader the core character of Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword, but he’s also been described as a “little bit of a motherfucker,” which ought to dovetail quite nicely with the director’s modus operandi.
Whether it’s Brad Pitt boxing to Oasis classic “Fucking in the Bushes” at the tail-end of Snatch or Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes solving crimes at the eleventh hour, Ritchie has developed a knack for characters that are, for want of a better phrase, a little rough around the edges. But Hunnam’s hero in the making isn’t the only iconic figure due to appear in Legend of the Sword, as there’s also Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey as Guinevere. Those familiar with the King Arthur lore will know that Guinevere is a key figure in the kingdom of Camelot, and goes on to become Arthur’s significant other.
As this is a revisionist take on the medieval fable, though, there’s every chance Guy Ritchie and his writing team will play around with Guinevere’s origins, with one report indicating that Bergès-Frisbey’s gracious character will actually be introduced as one of Merlin’s many protégés. Per CBM, Warner Bros.’ latest character poster pegs her character as “The Mage,” so it’s possible Guinevere will have a slightly different role to play in next month’s Legend of the Sword. Also on board for that fantastical adventure are Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Eric Bana, Annabelle Wallis (The Mummy), Aidan Gillen and Hermione Corfield.
Charlie Hunnam’s title lead will draw Excalibur from the stone when King Arthur: Legend Of The Sword lights up theaters on May 12th. It’s been a long time coming, too, considering that Warner Bros. pushed back the film’s release date not once, but twice. Will Guy Ritchie’s fantasy epic be worth the wait? Time will tell.
