The Last Jedi is currently the one Star Wars film on everyone’s radar – and rightly so – but somewhere in the bowels of Lucasfilm, Colin Trevorrow is quietly piecing together Episode IX.
Tentatively slated for a release in 2019, last we reported on Star Wars: Episode IX, one rumor claimed that the likes of Tatooine, Endor and Mustafar would all feature across the next two entries in the Skywalker saga. Whether that holds true is another question entirely, but when MTV caught up with Colin Trevorrow at last week’s CinemaCon, the writer-director turned in a status report regarding the sequel’s script. In short: “there is a draft,” but Trevorrow cautions that the Powers That Be continue to iterate and polish the screenplay as we speak. That’s not all too surprising, really; a film of Episode IX‘s stature is no doubt passed around internally before the likes of Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy give the all-clear, at which point the cameras can start to roll.
Indeed, if Trevorrow and co-writer Derek Connolly (Jurassic World) are currently in possession of an early draft, Star Wars: Episode IX has a shot at making its alleged July 2017 start date. Alas, without any official confirmation from Disney, the jury’s still out on the film’s production timeline, but if nothing else, fans can take solace in the fact that Episode IX is beginning to take shape behind the scenes.
Per MTV: “We’re writing, we’re designing, and there is a draft. You know, we’re throwing 110 percent of our souls into it, so there will be nothing left of me when I’m done.”
One thing’s for sure: Colin Trevorrow and Derek Connolly aren’t taking Star Wars: Episode IX lightly. Two years ago, the creative duo resurrected a dormant icon in Jurassic World, so we’re fascinated to see how the pair take to a galaxy far, far away.
