We know that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has planned far into the future when it comes to what’s next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and while we also know that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is on the way, it remains to be seen which other films will delve into the cosmic side of this world of superheroes.
That being said, it’s starting to look like these types of adventures are going to become a priority for the studio. When you bear in mind that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn will likely be taking on an advisory role with Marvel similar to the one Joss Whedon had after Avengers: Age of Ultron, the decision to head further into the ‘Cosmic Universe,’ as Feige puts it here, does make a lot of sense.
“I think it’s a little early to know what it’s going to look like. I think things are going to look very different at that point, but I think the early discussions we’ve had with James [Gunn] about Vol. 3 and beyond with what we’ll call the ‘Cosmic Universe’ and the Guardian characters is very exciting,” said Feige. “Which is why he signed up and we announced that even before Guardians Vol. 2 came out.”
It definitely sounds like we can expect Gunn to serve as a watchful eye over the cosmic side of the MCU then, and it almost seems as if the plan is for a whole new Marvel Cosmic Universe to launch, which will feature not only the Guardians but perhaps a variety of other outer space heroes as well.
Just how much Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will build to that remains to be seen, but this is definitely intriguing news. Feige has already said that Phase 4 could look totally different and if we’re going to be seeing a bunch of cosmic adventures in the place of tales about The Avengers, then that would certainly explain those comments.
